From the Hive: Spring

As the warmth of the sun invites nature to bloom, the hive buzzes with excitement - spring is here! We caught up with Peter Moskovits, founder and expert beekeeper of Honey by the Bay, for a look inside the hive and check in on our beloved bees.

The once-still colony is alive again with motion. The queen resumes her rhythm, laying eggs that will hatch into thousands of new bees. The workers, winter-weary but unwavering, begin building new honeycomb - delicate, golden hexagons crafted from beeswax, which they create using pollen gathered from the season’s earliest flowers.

Each trip from the hive is purposeful: wings whirring, legs dusted in pollen, the bees move with a choreography to spring’s song. The hive becomes a nursery and a pantry all at once. Pollen, rich in protein, feeds the freshly hatched brood. All while nectar is passed from bee to bee and fanned by their wings, it thickens - until, through their collective effort, it becomes honey.

Outside, the landscape is changing. Buds unfurl, fruit trees blush in bloom, and dandelions turn their faces to the sun. The bees are part of it all, weaving between petals, helping the earth awaken with each pass. As the hive grows, it prepares for expansion. Soon, some colonies will divide, sending out a swarm to find a new home. More growth.

Spring in the hive is a season of promise, of building and becoming, of preparing for the future while reinforcing the promise that each winter is met with a spring - something we can remind ourselves of as we move through our external and internal seasons.
